Install a font
Install a font on Linux
Install a font for your user account with Fontconfig.
Updated:
Prepare the font file
Extract the ZIP and locate the .ttf or .otf files. Some desktop environments offer an Install button when you open a font. Otherwise, use the steps below.
Install for your user account
- Create the font directory in a terminal:
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/fonts - Use your file manager to copy the extracted fonts into that directory. Ctrl + H often reveals hidden folders.
- Refresh the font cache:
fc-cache -f ~/.local/share/fonts
This method is for systems using Fontconfig and needs no administrator permission. If fc-cache is unavailable, check your distribution’s Fontconfig package.
Reopen the app
Close and reopen the app, then look for the font. Sandboxed apps may have their own font settings; consult the app’s documentation if needed.
